MY HIT LIST-BLACK COLOSSUS

Following on from yesterdays post I would like to draw your attention to Issue #2 of Savage Sword of Conan 1974 and Black Colossus which is an incredible piece of work by Roy Thomas John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala.
The story concerns political machinations war, sorcery and brutal retribution all revolving around the hero; Robert E Howard's Conan.
The artwork is layered and dense with superb inking Alcala over Buscema's always reliable pencils. There is a colour version available which loses the feel of the original piece but is worth a view.

This is probably the first Comic book story in which we see Conan grabbing hold of authority and his own destiny with both hands as he is randomly selected (or is it fate) to lead the army of Princess Yasmela. It's a great story perfectly executed and a great example of the genre that Marvel created in the early seventies of genre Sword and Sorcery for the older reader.

  1. One of the finest pieces of comic book art ever made. From what I read, Alfredo Alcala had a bit of chip on his shoulder. Although he was famous in the Filipino comic scene, he was an unknown in the US. I get the sense he was trying to prove a point with this artwork. I know John Buscema did the layouts, but it's Alcala, for me, that make this jaw dropping.
