TOP OF THE XMAS POPS
The great era’s of Christmas songs roughly breaks down to three periods; The Golden age of the Hollywood Musical which produced White Christmas and have yourself a merry little Christmas to name but two. The Motown Phil Spector era which gave us songs such as Frosty The Snowman and Santa Claus is coming to town.
For me the third great era was the era of the seventies when some rather serious pop stars of the day gave us some Xmas Tunes.

But it was also the age of the novelty record which reaped hits for Rolf Harris, Clive Dunn and Benny Hill; who topped the Christmas charts in consecutive years and we also had Christmas efforts from The Goodies, The Wombles, Mud, Showaddywaddy, The Smurfs, Boney M, Judge Dread and Chris Hill all of varying degrees of awfulness yet charming in their own ways.
One of the very worst
In a way those days of the seventies, when Christmas Top of The Pops was very much a Christmas day family occasion, gave us songs that really capture the Christmas feeling; all of the songs, the good the bad and the ugly.
