Re-evaluating the nineties

I have always thought of the nineties as a bland era in artistic terms yet reflecting on the movies of the decade it was quite a time. The Blockbuster still retained some substance and genuine fun; unlike the post LOTR era that followed when big office equates with crassness. Mainstream movies were also still credible and not commercially driven lightweight fare. Independent movies re stated themselves as did foreign language films. The Decade began with Goodfellas and ended with American beauty, in between we saw the arrival of Singer, Gallo, Lassiter, Haneke, Miike, Tarantino and Fincher and the return of Mallick. Established Directors also produced some great work Scorsese, Mann, Altman, Leigh and Cameron.

Treats from the nineties

Heat, LA Confidential
Lone Star, Funny Games
Run Lola Run, Being John Malkovich
Reservoir dogs, Pulp Fiction
Audition, Ring
Boogie Nights, The Ice Storm
Chungking Express, Secrets and lies
Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan
Happiness, Magnolia
The Player, The Shawshank Redemption
Goodfellas, Casino
King of New York, Boyz ‘n the hood
Delicatessen, The Silence of the lambs
Unforgiven, Dances with Wolves

A good decade at the movies that shows how poor the last decade has been.  The nineties was possibly the ‘new eighties’
