CRINGE CORNER: POWER POP PUNKS

Generation X, The Boys, 999, The Vibrators, the Members, Toy Dolls and a host of others. I guess that these bands were no different to the ones that jumped onto Bowie and Bolan’s coattails in the seventies or Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran’s in the eighties, a few zips and spiky haircuts here a snarl and a safety pin there and ‘presto change-o’ there you have it Power Pop punk. And yes that particular dodgy baton was taken up by the west Coast American’s who are still going now. I expected that kind of thing from The USA but the fact that these bands were British makes their transgressions all the more insipid.

What’s notable is that these bands songs do not stand up to the test of time in any way. At the time the Radio and TOTP was awash with these bands and we all got used to them I suppose, but hearing those records now they are pretty woeful; lacking the clout of the Sex Pistols and The Clash and unlike The Buzzcocks,  simplistic in their pop sensibilities. There was a lack of truth in this mob, and it showed.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Pop band
wagon jumping but these bands were neither Fish not Fowl.
