MY HIT LIST # 35 A Song for You Donny Hathaway

Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945 – January 13, 1979)
A fine singer indeed, and a superb songwriter, his greatest moment among many great moments ( young gifted and Black, The Ghetto, Someday we'll all be free, Where is the love)? A Song for You. His recording of this great song is one of those records that has so much heart and yes soul that it really moves the listener. It’s absolutely amazing. Of course it’s been covered by a great many people and often pops up on talent shows when a contestant is trying to show some sort of emotion and range but the original actually has that X factor. Donny suffered from Depression and paranoid Schizophrenia and his dark and melancholic heart comes across in this performance.

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With 10,000 people watching

But we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you

I know your image of me is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
And darling can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Baby can't you see through me

Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you

You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love , Withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
Now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
Cuz my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You' re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song to you
